In order to work in Oman, both an employment visa and a labour permit are required. A medical fitness certificate is mandatory for citizens of India, Pakistan, Philippines, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Syria, Sudan, Ethiopia. The Royal Oman Police offers an online service for visa and work permit applications as well as renewals. Here, you can track the status of your applications electronically. You must keep your labour card (civil status ID card) with you at all times.

Sign a fair employment contract!

It is important to ensure that you have a written contract of your employment. Before signing, read your contract carefully. Do not sign a contract that you do not understand or agree with, and discuss and negotiate the terms of your contract with your employer. You should always keep a copy of the signed contract with you and are entitled to do so.

Inform yourself!

The Ministry of Manpower provides information on the Omani labour laws and on the Wage Protection System as well as releases regular updates on employment-related news. The Royal Oman Police also provides information on expatriate visa laws. Muscat Interational Airport’s Labour Relations Office runs 24-hours a day to inform newly arrived migrant workers and distributes information brochures on the Omani labour laws.

Know your rights and obligations!

As a migrant worker in Oman, you have the right to maintain a copy for your work contract, to be insured by your employer against work injuries, to be compensated for overtime, to receive timely payment, as well as to receive suitable sustenance, accommodation, and medical treatment during your contract period. In this regard, the Ministry of Manpower has published an information booklet on migrant worker rights and obligations.

Report your labour complaints!

Always keep a record of useful government and union contacts in case you encounter recruitment or employment problems. Breaches of your employment contract and other labour disputes can be reported digitally via the online portal of the Ministry of Manpower. Note that you should not immediately resign from your position as this could put you in an irregular work situation.
