Based on existing literature on labour migration to Taiwan the following tips for migrants intending to move to Taiwan can be formulated:

  1. Make sure that your employer (company or family in case of healthcare workers) has received approval from the Taiwanese government to hire foreign workers.
  2. Make sure that your wage is in line with the national minimum wage (including costs for board and lodging).
  3. If you want to switch employers during the period of your employment contract, you must first get the permission by the Taiwanese government to do so (See Employment Services Act, Art. 53).
  4. Make sure that health and labor insurance as well as accident insurance coverage (particularly in sectors with high accident rates such as the manufacturing and construction industry) are covered by the employer.
  5. You should make official agreements with the employers/family regarding salary and working hours.
  6. Do not allow salary deductions to cover recruitment fees or other costs related to the migration process.
  7. Do not stay in Taiwan illegally: this can be punished with high fines.
