Verify the status of your recruiter!

Check that the recruitment agency is recognized by the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) before continuing the recruitment process.

Do your research!

Check the pre-departure page from the SLBFE, which includes information on deciding on foreign employment, finding employment through an agent or friend, training, loan facilities, orientation, job agreements, approval before departure, mandatory registration, and preparations for the journey. SLBFE offers several pre-departure training courses, especially for domestic workers and care-givers. In addition, the Association of Licensed Foreign Employment Agencies (ALFEA) also provides useful information on licensed agents and maintains a black list of agents who do not adhere to ethical practices as outlined in the Code of Ethical Conduct for Licensed Foreign Employment Agencies and Licensees (CoEC).

Sign a fair employment contract!

Follow the job agreement guidelines listed by the SLBFE to make sure you understand how to sign a fair contract. Above all, read your contract carefully before signing. Discuss and negotiate the terms of your contract. Keep a copy of the signed contract with you. Do not sign a contract that you do not understand or agree with.

Know your rights!

Find out more about the labour laws in your destination country. Always keep a record of useful government and union contacts in case you encounter recruitment or employment problems.

Register your complaints!

Several support mechanisms exist when facing problems associated with recruitment or your employment abroad. You may register your complaints with the SLBFE and contact the Sri Lankan embassy in your host country. The Ceylon Worker’s Congress also provides ad-hoc support to Sri Lankans abroad and may be able to guide you with information.
